Could Processed Foods Be Triggering Your Eczema Flare-Ups?

By Dr Pallavi Vasisht (Homeopath & Naturopath) 7 October 2026 4 min read

Introduction

Have you ever noticed that after enjoying a slice of cake or some chips, your eczema seems to flare up? You find yourself itching more and feeling uncomfortable, and you can’t help but wonder why?

We all know processed foods aren’t great for our health, but they can be especially troublesome for people with eczema. Many people don’t realise that these foods might actually be causing their flare-ups.

Let’s take a closer look at how processed foods connect to eczema. In this post, I want to share some insights that I give to my patients to help them understand these triggers more clearly.

What Exactly Are Processed Foods?

Processed foods are those that have been changed from their natural state. This includes methods like freezing, drying, canning, cooking, or adding things like sugar, salt, and preservatives.

Some foods are only lightly processed — like frozen fruits and vegetables — while others are heavily processed, such as chips, cookies, cakes, sodas, and fast food.

Why Do Processed Foods Trigger Eczema Flare-Ups?

Processed foods can lead to inflammation in the body by upsetting gut health and damaging the skin’s natural barrier.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Inflammation: Highly processed foods often contain lots of added sugars, unhealthy fats, and refined carbs that can spike insulin levels and trigger inflammation throughout the body. This type of inflammation affects your entire system, not just one part of your body — therefore called ‘systemic inflammation.’

  2. Gut Health: Eating processed foods can upset the balance of good bacteria in your gut, which might cause a condition called “leaky gut.” This allows harmful substances to enter your bloodstream, provoking reactions that can worsen skin irritation.

  3. Additives and Preservatives: Many snacks and fast foods contain artificial ingredients, colours, flavours and preservatives that can irritate your skin and immune system, especially if you’re already prone to eczema.

  4. Missing Nutrients: Diets heavy in processed foods often lack important nutrients, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids that help your body fight inflammation naturally.

How Do These Foods Actually Trigger Eczema?

The next curious question you could be thinking about is: how do these foods actually trigger eczema?

Eczema flare-ups can happen after eating due to food allergies, histamine reactions, or inflammation caused by certain ingredients. Unlike immediate allergic reactions, which can cause swelling in minutes, some responses to processed foods can take 12 to 48 hours to show up as worsening eczema.

This can lead to increased inflammation and a weakened skin barrier, making you more susceptible to irritation and itching.

It’s important to note that while processed foods can trigger eczema, they are not the root cause of it.

Triggers vs. Causes: An Important Difference

Many people confuse the two, but triggers and causes are different concepts.

If you’re looking for a deeper understanding of eczema, check out my previous blog. Remember, unless your body is predisposed to eczema, triggers alone won’t cause flare-ups.

Processed foods are just one part of the overall picture. Think of your skin as a reflection of what’s happening inside your body. If you eat a lot of processed foods, it can upset your gut and mess with your immune system, leading to more inflammation, especially if you’re already prone to eczema.

This can make it harder for your skin to protect itself and can contribute to flare-ups.

Identifying Your Personal Triggers

Now, identifying your personal triggers is key. Each person is unique, which is why at Natural Skin Clinic, we focus on understanding our patients — looking at your gut health, immune system, emotional well-being, and genetics.

We guide you through testing, elimination diets, anti-inflammatory eating, skincare routines, and when to seek urgent care. Food-related eczema flare-ups can sometimes look like other conditions, and because reactions can be delayed, it can be hard to pinpoint your triggers.
